Part 5: Self-Publishing

When you self-publish, you become the publisher.

That means you’re responsible for every stage of bringing your book to market, including:

  • Hiring editors
  • Commissioning a cover designer
  • Formatting the manuscript
  • Purchasing ISBNs (where applicable)
  • Uploading files to publishing platforms
  • Setting the retail price
  • Managing marketing and advertising
  • Building an author brand

While that might sound overwhelming, the good news is that you don’t have to do everything yourself. Many successful indie authors hire experienced freelancers to handle specialist tasks while retaining overall control of the project.

The Advantages of Self-Publishing

Complete Creative Control

No one tells you what to change.

You decide:

  • The title
  • The cover
  • The release date
  • The pricing
  • The genres
  • The marketing strategy

For authors with a clear vision, this level of freedom is incredibly appealing.

Higher Royalties

Traditional publishers typically pay authors between 8% and 15% royalties on printed books.

Self-published authors can earn significantly more.

For example, Amazon KDP offers royalties of up to 70% on many ebooks, depending on pricing and distribution choices.

While you’ll still need to cover production costs yourself, you’ll usually receive a much larger share of every sale.

Faster Publishing

Traditional publishing can take two or even three years from signing a contract to seeing your book released.

Self-publishing allows you to work to your own schedule.

Once your manuscript is ready, publication can happen in days rather than years.

The Challenges

With freedom comes responsibility.

A beautifully written book won’t sell itself.

Successful independent authors often spend just as much time learning about:

  • Marketing
  • Social media
  • Email newsletters
  • Amazon algorithms
  • Advertising
  • Branding
  • Reader engagement

In other words, self-publishing is as much about running a small business as it is about writing.

Is Self-Publishing Right for You?

It can be an excellent option if you:

  • Enjoy learning new skills
  • Like being in control
  • Have an entrepreneurial mindset
  • Are prepared to invest time and money upfront
  • Want to publish quickly

However, if you dislike marketing or don’t want to manage the publishing process yourself, another route may be more suitable.

Helpful Self-Publishing Platforms

Many independent authors publish through:

Each platform has its strengths, and many authors use a combination to maximise their reach.
